Ever since its inception the society has been serving the cause of youth, Youth animators, teachers and educational administrators in Assam in particular and to other North Eastern States of India through carefully designed programs. Special focus of attention has been the rural youth who are deprived of the educational and developmental facilities.
GOD-GIFTED DREAM (DBI)
Don Bosco Youth Mission and Educational Services had started its operation in a 100 sq ft office at Don Bosco Provincial House, Guwahati with a small but dedicated team. The thought process led to youth animation, social action and orientation programs besides livelihood-linked initiatives such as Bosco Barefoot College.
The dream of empowering the youth through accessible, affordable, relevant, job-oriented and value-based education started taking shape when the foundation stone of Don Bosco Institute (DBI) was laid on 8 December 2000 on a hillock at Kharghuli. The hillock on the bank of river Brahmaputra soon transformed from a barren patch in an area haunted by anti-socials to a landscaped architectural wonder called DBI. DBYES slowly shifted its office to its new setup (DBI) in August 2004 and which was inaugurated by Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh on 22 November 2004. Since then, it has been on a relentless mission of enlightenment. The activities and programs at Don Bosco Institute are geared to address the needs and problems of the young people thereby enhancing the prospects of better living standards and improved revenue generation sources. Trainings conducted for youth at DBI : Career Guidance and Counselling, Personality development, Spoken English, Hospitality, Beauty & Spa, RACW- Electronics, IT Related courses, Professional Coaching in UPSC, APSC, NPSC, MPSC, MAT, CDSE, Bank PO, SSC, Medical, Engineering, Management etc. Further Vocational trainings in Carpentry, Motor mechanics, driving, Carpentry, Poultry, Pigery, Cane and Bamboo works, Hospitality, Tailoring, Plumbing, Kitchen Garden etc have been imparted at its 4nos rural vocational centres. Besides youth, the Institute also provides services to teachers, school administrators, Govt. servants, Private entities and NGO’s to empower them to take higher responsibility in social, financial, technical and management areas through customized training packages. The society also introduced the MBA programme in 2009 as Don Bosco Institute of Management and as a constituent unit of ASSAM DON BOSCO UNIVERSITY, (ADBU) – the state’s first private university. Since then it has been a pioneering business school in Assam and the entire Northeast Region for graduate studies offering an integrated and diversified MBA program.
VISION & MISSION
IT ISN’T just enough to give shape to a dream. It is equally important to draw up a plan and adhere to it for excellence.
DBI was conceived as the epicenter for integrated youth care, educational leadership, management training, socio-cultural development and research. The objective: nurturing talent and inspiring commitment. The strength to embark upon the mission came from St John Bosco, who said, “It is enough for me to know that you are young, to love you.”
The Society laid out the six-point service, NEEPON – Nurture, Empower, Equip, Promote, Offer and Network.
NURTURE: The focus being on youth, it is imperative for DBI to nurture excellence and foster commitment in youth care, education, civil administration and corporate management.
EMPOWER: An opportunity can change the lives of marginalized and at-risk sections of the youth. DBI was established primarily for them, to build their skills and capacities, and connect them to enhanced opportunities.
EQUIP: A society requires able, pragmatic leaders in the march toward progress. DBI understood this requirement to equip the society’s next-generation leaders, competent, dedicated and committed to excellence, equity and peace-building.
PROMOTE: Educational theory and practice need constant rethink and reevaluation. DBI has thus been promoting reflection, innovation and creativity besides facilitating consultancy and training.
OFFER: Youth development isn’t possible without orientation in sectors that provide them opportunities. The need for synergy made DBI offer personal and professional growth opportunities for leaders in government, civil administration, industry and corporate sectors, collaborating in piloting change.
Don Bosco Institute is perhaps one of the biggest youth organization in N.E. India in terms of network and the variety of services offered. It works in partnership with both Govt organization and private to achieve its Goals, Vision and Mission.
